Experience:
Vice President and CTO,
The Friday Group, March 2007 - present
I lead a team of programmers as we created a major web application,
docuble.com largely using the technologies described in earlier parts of my resume.
I participate in the decisions about the operation of the business, including which contracts we pursue, handling personnel issues, and
day to day management of the IT operations.
I perform the majority of customer support for
several customer support and service contracts, assisting the clients by phone, email, and instant message.
I am the maintenance programmer for several production systems, and I am responsible for developing new features for those existing systems.
I am responsible for the direction and implementation of system administration
of our production and development servers. Since 2000, I've managed
over a dozen Linux or FreeBSD servers, usually on the Internet backbone in a
hosting facility. These servers maintained good uptime and tight security.
These are and were production web servers, and I am responsible for all decisions
regarding their care and maintenance, often performing the work myself.
Consultant, Davis Langdon, March 2006 - March 2007
This was a continuation of the work with DLSS LLLP, described below, after a change
of company ownership. I continued to be responsible for managing the same team of
programmers, system administrators, and technical support staff as we created large-scale
web applications. After years of struggling with the issue of where in a large Construction consulting
company to put my group, Davis Langdon finally decided to get out of the kind of business we did,
and we formed a company called The Friday Group LLC (described above) to continue the operation.
Director of Systems Development, DLSS LLLP, 2003 - 2006
I was responsible for managing a team of programmers, system administrators, and
technical support staff as we designed, wrote, and implemented large-scale web applications.
These web applications use PHP, MySQL, Javascript and XML to allow for the management
of projects and creation of construction specifications, and are in use by large
retailers, quantity surveyors, and construction specifiers on several continents.
The servers that are managed by my team and myself are sited in the US, UK,
and Australia, running in most cases with open internet access
with high reliability. My team performed well. We were understaffed throughout
our endeavors, yet we maintained a degree of rigor which makes me proud,
while evincing a flexibility that allowed us to follow business opportunities
as they arose.
Along with my management responsibilities, I am a capable developer in my own
right. I wrote much of the code used in these web applications, as well as a
number of desktop projects to support our main products, including programs in
Delphi, Visual Basic, and RealBasic. These programs in some cases interfaced
with Microsoft Word or Excel for extraction of data for insertion into a database,
and in others used XML to describe web pages layouts.
Lead Programmer, DLSS LLLP, 2000 - 2003
I was responsible for the design and implementation of several major web applications.
I designed and wrote several support applications in Windows. I directed other
programmers in implementation of these applications. At this time I was the main
system administrator for DLSS LLLP. I provided computer support consulting to
companies using MacOS and Windows based computers.
Senior Scientist, Ares Advanced Technology, 1995 - 2000
I used a BIAcore in the development of assays of binding kinetics and affinity for use in the qualification of lots of proteins . I used this instrument in the development of concentration assays for a soluble receptors and antibodies. I used BIAcore and Isothermal Titration Calorimetry to characterize kinetics and affinity of receptor-ligand binding and antibody-antigen binding. I was responsible for maintenance and operation for these instruments, as well as method development and data analysis. I performed protein purification, crosslinking, and chromatography. I analyzed proteins by IEF and 2-D IEF/SDS-PAGE. I conducted Western blot analysis to test for contamination in protein preparations. I served as chemical hygiene officer and emergency response coordinator.
I became the System Manager for our MicroVax running VMS, and was a resource to many users for support on VMS, MS Windows, or unix. Administered a Sun Workstation running an early version of Solaris. I set up a Linux server and began a web application in Perl to be used in proteomics research.
Scientist, Ares Advanced Technology, 1992 - 1995
I was responsible for peptide synthesis. I set up the peptide synthesis function at this company, performing synthesis and purification of more than 30 peptides. I designed experiments using radioreceptor assays and bioassays to elucidate any functional capacity in these peptides. I conducted amino acid composition and sequence analysis and interpreted the results. I set up and performed milligram scale purification of one glycosylated protein, and set up analytical methods for several proteins and peptides.
Technical Assistant, The Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research, 1989-1992
I was responsible for maintenance and operation of two protein sequencers. I interpreted the results from these instruments, and discussed results and methods with sequencing customers. I performed microscale purification, enzymatic digestion, and sequence determination of uncharacterized proteins. I set up and performed amino acid composition analysis. I used SDS-PAGE to purify and analyze proteins, and performed transfers from gels to PVDF and sequenced the isolated proteins. I conducted in-situ enzymatic digestion and chemical cleavage of proteins on nitrocellulose and PVDF. I assisted users unfamiliar with chromatography in operation of HPLC equipment.
Research Associate, Creative BioMolecules, 1987-1989
I conducted amino acid composition analysis of peptides and proteins, interpreted the data and wrote reports regarding the results. I assisted in the quality control analysis of proteins manufactured by recombinant DNA technology. I sequenced proteins and peptides using automated Edman degradation. I purified proteins and peptides by HPLC. I determined C-terminal sequence of peptides using carboxypeptidases.
